Atlas Cedar essential oil is particularly appreciated for its many traditional properties.
According to specialised aromatherapy literature, it is known for:

• Air purifying
• Soothing and relaxing (in olfactory diffusion)
• Hair tonic (traditionally used for dandruff-prone scalps)
• Astringent (often included in care for blemish-prone skin)
• Decongesting (feeling of light legs, or damp atmospheres)
• Natural insect repellent

These qualities make this essential oil a favourite ally in many well-being, cosmetic and household care practices, while still requiring careful use.

Traditional uses

Aromatherapy

Traditionally diffused, Atlas Cedar essential oil is used to create a warm, soothing atmosphere. Its woody fragrance encourages relaxation, meditation and grounding.

Cosmetics and natural care

Diluted in a vegetable oil, it is known as a scalp tonic and used in care for oily or dandruff-prone hair.
It is also used in purifying care for blemish-prone skin.

Household care

Thanks to its cleansing and repellent properties, it is used in room sprays and natural household products to freshen the air and protect linen.

Well-being and relaxation

Its deep, resinous fragrance is used to help with relaxation, refocusing and emotional balance.

Other possible uses

Its fixative fragrance makes it a widely used oil in natural perfumery, especially as a woody base note.

Uses

Diffusion

A few drops in a diffuser are enough to enjoy its woody, soothing notes.
• Recommended duration: 15 to 30 minutes in a well-ventilated room.

Skin application

Always dilute Atlas Cedar essential oil in a vegetable oil.
• Recommended dilution: 1 to 2% maximum
• Example: 2 drops per 10 ml of vegetable oil.
⚠️ Never use undiluted on the skin.

Less common than with other oils, but possible occasionally in blends for well-being preparations.

Aromatic bath

Dilute a few drops in a dispersing base (neutral gel, milk or natural dispersant) before adding to hot bath water.

Synergies

Atlas Cedar essential oil combines ideally with other essential oils to amplify its benefits or balance its olfactory notes:

• With Patchouli: to create a woody, sensual, comforting blend, ideal in diffusion or in natural perfume compositions.
• With citrus fruits (Lemon, Grapefruit, Sweet Orange): to add a fresh, toning touch, perfect in purifying sprays or energising care.
• With True Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia): to enhance its relaxing and soothing effects, whether in diffusion or in skin care.
• With Rose Geranium: for targeted care for oily skin, skin blemishes or body-contouring preparations.

⚠️ As with all essential oils, these combinations must be made with an appropriate dilution and in line with aromatherapy precautions.

Essential oils are powerful active ingredients that should be used with caution.

The use of Atlas Cedar essential oil is not recommended for:

• Pregnant or breastfeeding women
• Children under 6
• People with epilepsy or a neurological history

Specific precautions

• Do not use undiluted on the skin: risk of irritation.
• Always do an allergy test in the crook of the elbow.
• Store away from light, heat and air, in a tightly closed tinted glass bottle.

A well-stored oil can keep its properties for 3 years after opening.

The plant

Atlas Cedar essential oil is extracted from Cedrus atlantica, a majestic tree of the Pinaceae family.

Native to the Atlas mountains of North Africa (mainly Morocco and Algeria), this tree can grow 30 to 40 metres tall. It is recognisable by its imposing shape, evergreen needles and dense, resistant wood, with a characteristic resinous scent.

The essential oil is extracted from the heart of the trunk by steam distillation.

With a woody, warm and slightly camphor-like fragrance, it has been used for centuries in traditional rituals, perfumery and well-being care.

Anecdotes & History

Atlas Cedar holds an important place in many cultures:

• Ancient Egypt: used for embalming and spiritual rituals.
• Universal symbolism: a tree of strength, wisdom and longevity.
• Its resistant wood has long been used for building and carving.
• Its essential oil has always been linked to purification rituals and traditional care.

Even today, its deep, resinous fragrance is still prized in well-being, meditation and natural perfumery practices.

Physical and olfactory characteristics

Atlas Cedar essential oil is characterised by:

• Appearance: fluid liquid
• Colour: light yellow to orange
• Scent: woody, balsamic, warm, slightly camphor-like
• Texture: fairly dense compared with other essential oils

It is highly valued as a base note in natural perfumery.

Biochemical composition

The richness of Atlas Cedar essential oil lies in its concentration of sesquiterpenes, molecules known for their gentle action.
Main active constituents:

• β-himachalene (40 to 50%)
• α-himachalene
• γ-himachalene
• Atlantone (sesquiterpene ketone)

These compounds explain its purifying, balancing and soothing properties.
