Lime essential oil is particularly appreciated for its many traditional properties.
According to specialised aromatherapy literature, it is known for:

• Refreshing and invigorating properties
• Skin toning action
• Air-purifying effect
• Cleansing power in diffusion
• Natural fragrance
• Stimulating and energising action
• Astringent properties (in cosmetic use)
• Antioxidant effect (thanks to limonene)

These qualities make this essential oil a precious ally in well-being, cosmetics and natural household care, while still requiring careful use.

Traditional uses

Aromatherapy

Lime essential oil is traditionally diffused to cleanse the air and create an invigorating, stimulating atmosphere. Its zesty fragrance helps concentration and fights passing tiredness.

Cosmetics and natural care

It is commonly included in care for oily and blemish-prone skin. Its astringent potential makes it an ally of toning lotions and purifying gels. It is also used in energising massage oils, always diluted.

Household care

Thanks to its tangy fragrance, it is widely used in homemade household products (purifying sprays, multi-purpose cleaners, natural laundry detergents). Combined with oils such as Tea Tree or Lemon Eucalyptus, its cleansing power is enhanced.

Well-being and relaxation

The tangy scent of Lime helps create a tonic, energising atmosphere, much appreciated during periods of overwork or low energy.

Other possible uses

In cooking, its essence can be used at very low doses to flavour desserts or drinks (only with a certified food-grade oil).
In perfumery, it is a popular top note in summery, fruity compositions.

Uses

Diffusion

A few drops in a diffuser are enough to create a fresh, tonic atmosphere.

• Recommended duration: 15 to 20 minutes, 2 to 3 times a day.

Skin application

Always dilute Lime essential oil in a vegetable oil.

• Recommended dilution: 1 to 2% maximum (i.e. 1 to 2 drops per 10 ml of vegetable oil).
⚠️ Photosensitising: avoid any sun exposure within 6 to 12 hours of applying to the skin.

Inhalation

As a dry inhalation (1 drop on a tissue) or with a portable diffuser, it brings a stimulating burst of freshness.

Aromatic bath

⚠️ Not recommended undiluted in the bath. If used, always mix it with a dispersing base (powdered milk, neutral gel, natural dispersant).

Synergies

Lime essential oil blends perfectly with other essential oils to enrich its benefits and fragrance:

• Sweet Orange, Mandarin, Grapefruit: invigorating, sunny blends
• Peppermint, Cineole Rosemary: an enhanced tonic effect
• True Lavender, Rose Geranium: a balance between zesty energy and floral softness
• Atlas Cedar, Frankincense: rounded, deep, meditative blends

⚠️ Precaution: respect the appropriate dosages and the rules of aromatherapy.

Essential oils are powerful active ingredients that should be used with caution.

The use of Lime essential oil is not recommended for:

• Pregnant or breastfeeding women
• Children under 6
• People with citrus allergies

Specific precautions

• Photosensitising: avoid any sun exposure after application.
• Dermocaustic when undiluted: always dilute before applying to the skin.
• Use occasionally, not for prolonged periods.
• Store away from light and heat, in a tightly closed tinted glass bottle.

Storing it in the refrigerator is recommended to preserve its freshness and properties.

The plant

Lime (Citrus aurantifolia) is a small fruit tree of the Rutaceae family, native to South-East Asia but now grown in tropical regions such as Mexico and Brazil.

Medium-sized (3 to 5 m), it has evergreen foliage and produces round fruits, green to yellowish when ripe, whose zest is rich in essential oil.

The essential oil is obtained by cold-pressing the fresh zest, which preserves its characteristic zesty, tangy aromas.

Its fresh, tangy and slightly sweet fragrance makes it a very popular oil in aromatherapy, natural perfumery and cosmetics.

Anecdotes & History

Native to South-East Asia, Lime has become established in many tropical regions, especially Mexico and the Caribbean, where it holds an important place in local culture and traditional cooking.

In some traditions, it is used in air-purifying rituals for its tangy, invigorating fragrance. In perfumery, it is often a sparkling top note in summery, fruity creations.

Physical and olfactory characteristics

Lime essential oil is characterised by:

• Appearance: clear, fluid liquid
• Colour: pale yellow to light green
• Scent: fresh, lively, tangy, with a sweet fruity nuance
• Aromatic notes: lemony top, fruity and slightly camphor-like heart

This zesty olfactory profile makes it a perfect oil for balancing and stimulating blends.

Biochemical composition

The richness of Lime essential oil lies in its monoterpene content.
Main active constituents:

• Limonene (up to 60%)
• β-pinene
• γ-terpinene
• Citral (geranial + neral)
• Sabinene
• Myrcene

This composition explains its refreshing, purifying and toning properties.
