The plant

Black spruce is a conifer of the Pinaceae family, native to the boreal forests of North America, particularly Canada and the northern United States.

This majestic tree can reach 20 to 30 metres in height and thrives in cold, humid climates. Its evergreen needles and resinous twigs are steam distilled to obtain a fresh, woody essential oil that concentrates all the strength of the boreal forest.

Anecdotes & History

Black spruce is considered a sacred tree by several Indigenous peoples of North America, such as the Innu, the Cree and the Algonquin. They used it in their shamanic rituals for its purifying, energising and protective virtues.

Its needles were infused or burned to drive away stagnant energies and accompany spiritual healing ceremonies. Its wood was also used to build canoes, bows and dwellings.

The essential oil, for its part, only became popular in Europe recently, with the development of modern aromatherapy and growing interest in natural medicine.

Physical and olfactory characteristics

Black spruce essential oil stands out for:

• Appearance: clear liquid, sometimes slightly amber
• Colour: pale yellow to colourless
• Odour: resinous, woody, fresh, reminiscent of sap and pine needles
• Olfactory note: top to heart, medium to strong intensity

Its fresh, invigorating scent brings a feeling of clarity and energy, while evoking northern forest landscapes.

Biochemical composition

Black spruce essential oil is rich in monoterpenes, which give it its toning and purifying action.

• α-pinene (25 to 35%)
• β-pinene
• Camphene
• Borneol
• Limonene
• Myrcene
• Bornyl acetate
• δ-3-carene

This composition makes it an oil close to Scots pine or Balsam fir, while keeping its unique olfactory signature.
