The plant

Eucalyptus Globulus, also called Tasmanian blue gum, is a majestic tree native to Australia and belonging to the Myrtaceae family. Now grown in Portugal, Spain, Madagascar and China, it is known for its rapid growth and high essential oil yield.

Its leaves, rich in eucalyptol, are steam-distilled to obtain an essential oil with a camphor-like, penetrating fragrance that is instantly recognisable. This tree, sometimes nicknamed the "fever tree", was used in Aboriginal tradition to clean up marshy areas.

Anecdotes & History

Native to Australia, Eucalyptus Globulus was nicknamed the "fever tree" by Aboriginal people, who used it to clean up marshes and wetlands.
It was introduced to Europe in the 19th century, in particular to drain and clean up marshy land in Italy and Corsica.

Also called blue gum because of the colour of its young leaves, it was one of the first species used for large-scale essential oil extraction. Today, it is still widely grown in temperate regions for its aromatic and industrial uses.

Physical and olfactory characteristics

Eucalyptus Globulus essential oil is characterised by:

• Appearance: clear, fluid liquid
• Colour: colourless to very pale yellow
• Scent: camphor-like, aromatic and intensely fresh
• Olfactory note: top note, highly volatile

Its lively, penetrating fragrance evokes the freshness of the great outdoors and is ideal in blends for diffusion.

Biochemical composition

The richness of Eucalyptus Globulus essential oil lies in:

• 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol): 70 to 85%
• Alpha-pinene
• Limonene
• Globulol
• Beta-pinene
• Caryophyllene
• Alpha-terpineol

The high 1,8-cineole content explains its powerful olfactory profile and its purifying and respiratory properties.
