Properties

Italian Helichrysum essential oil, also called Immortelle, has been known since Antiquity for its unique virtues. According to specialised aromatherapy literature, it is appreciated for:

• Circulation properties: traditionally used to encourage a feeling of lightness and leg comfort
• Regenerating and toning properties: contributes to healthy-looking skin
• Repairing properties: helps the skin recover and supports sensitive skin
• Relaxing effect: accompanies moments of relaxation and letting go
• Anti-ageing action: known for its interest in natural care for a more youthful look
• Purifying virtues: historically used in Mediterranean rituals

These qualities make Italian Helichrysum a precious, rare essential oil, essential in well-being practices and natural cosmetic care.

Traditional uses

Aromatherapy

Traditionally, Italian Helichrysum is used in gentle diffusion for its floral, honeyed notes, which encourage relaxation and create a soothing atmosphere, especially during meditation.

Cosmetics and natural care

Appreciated in cosmetics, it is known for soothing sensitive skin and accompanying care for mature skin. It is often included in repairing balms, anti-ageing creams, massage oils or face serums.

Household care

Thanks to its naturally aromatic compounds, Italian Helichrysum can be used in homemade purifying sprays, blended with other oils, to freshen the air.

Well-being and relaxation

Its warm, comforting fragrance is highly sought after in yoga, meditation and energy-cleansing rituals.

Other possible uses

In some local Mediterranean traditions, Helichrysum has also been used as an infusion or maceration (with the hydrosol or the plant itself rather than the pure essential oil).

Uses

Diffusion

A few drops in a cold-air diffuser let you enjoy its floral, warm aromas.
It is advisable to diffuse in sessions of 10 to 15 minutes in a well-ventilated room.

⚠️ Avoid diffusing in the presence of young children or sensitive animals.

Skin application

Always dilute Italian Helichrysum essential oil in a vegetable oil (jojoba, calophyllum, argan).
The recommended dilution is 1 to 2% maximum (i.e. about 1 drop per 5 ml of vegetable oil).

It is ideal in repairing balms, targeted massage oils or eye contour care at very low concentrations.

Inhalation

For dry inhalation, put 1 drop on a tissue and breathe in gently to enjoy its comforting notes.

⚠️ Avoid wet inhalation (hot steam), because of its ketone content.

Aromatic bath

Rarely used on its own, but it can be added in a gentle blend with other essential oils in a bath, always with a suitable dispersant (e.g. Solubol, milk).

Synergies

Italian Helichrysum blends harmoniously with:

• True Lavender for soothing, relaxing care
• Rockrose for anti-ageing care and mature skin
• Ho Wood for a skin-regenerating effect
• Petitgrain Bigarade or Sweet Orange for relaxing blends
• Rose Geranium to enrich a harmonising massage oil

Essential oils are powerful active ingredients that should be used with caution.

Italian Helichrysum essential oil is precious but powerful. Its use requires a few precautions:

It is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women, or for children under 6.
It should be avoided by people taking anticoagulants, unless advised by a specialist doctor.

⚠️ Like all concentrated essential oils, it can cause skin irritation if used undiluted. Always dilute it in a vegetable oil.
⚠️ Do not apply to mucous membranes, eyes or sensitive areas.
⚠️ Its use should remain moderate and sensible, because of its high ketone content.

The plant

Italian Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum) belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is native to the Mediterranean basin and grows mainly in Corsica, Italy, Croatia and Greece, in sunny, dry areas.

Only the flowering tops are steam-distilled to produce this precious oil. Its golden flowers, which never wilt, have earned it the poetic nickname Immortelle.

Anecdotes & History

Helichrysum takes its name from the Greek helios (sun) and chrysos (gold), a reference to its golden flowers that never wilt, hence its nickname immortelle. Used since Antiquity, it was burned in Greek temples as an offering to the gods for its purifying properties.

In Corsica, this emblematic plant is protected and grown organically or in the wild, making it an exceptional product, particularly sought after by perfumers and natural formulators.

Its unique scent and rarity make it a precious oil, sometimes described as a treasure of Mediterranean aromatherapy.

Physical and olfactory characteristics

Italian Helichrysum essential oil stands out for its unique characteristics:

• Appearance: fluid liquid
• Colour: pale yellow to golden
• Scent: warm, honeyed and herbaceous, with notes of dry hay, liquorice and Mediterranean scrubland

Its complex fragrance, at once floral, spicy and comforting, makes it a highly prized oil in natural perfumery and high-end cosmetic care.

Biochemical composition

Italian Helichrysum essential oil has a rich and specific biochemical composition:

• Neryl acetate: 30 to 45%
• Italidiones I, II, III: 2 to 8%
• Neral and Geranial (citral): up to 10%
• Limonene: 2 to 5%
• α-Pinene: 1 to 3%
• γ-Curcumene: 5 to 15%

This synergy of aromatic molecules gives it its circulatory, repairing and anti-ageing properties, and makes it a rare, sought-after oil.
