Used in aromatic baths or in olfactotherapy, this oil encourages relaxation and helps you find a serene state of mind.

Other possible uses

In some South-East Asian culinary traditions, a trace of tropical basil (highly diluted essence) is sometimes used to flavour dishes, although this is rare in Europe.

Uses

Diffusion

A few drops in a diffuser let you enjoy its relaxing aromas.

It is recommended not to exceed 30 minutes of diffusion per session to preserve indoor air quality and avoid saturation.

Skin application

Always dilute Tropical Basil essential oil in a vegetable oil (e.g. sweet almond, jojoba) before applying it to the skin.

The recommended dilution is 1% to 2% maximum.

Example: 1 to 2 drops of essential oil per 10 ml of vegetable oil.

⚠️ Avoid applying to mucous membranes and sensitive areas.

Inhalation

For dry inhalation, put 1 drop on a tissue and breathe deeply.

This method is sometimes used to encourage a feeling of mental clarity.

Aromatic bath

Dilute a few drops of essential oil in a dispersing base (e.g. powdered milk or a natural dispersant) before adding it to the bath water.

Synergies

Possible synergies

Tropical Basil essential oil blends harmoniously with several other essential oils, in particular to enhance its effects:

• With True Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) for relaxation and calm

• With Peppermint essential oil (Mentha × piperita) for mental freshness and to invigorate the mind

• With Lemon essential oil (Citrus limonum) for purifying and revitalising blends in diffusion

• With Petitgrain Bigarade essential oil (Citrus aurantium ssp. amara) to accompany deep relaxation practices

⚠️ These synergies are used in well-being contexts only and always require dosages that respect aromatherapy precautions.

Essential oils are powerful active ingredients that should be used with caution.

The use of Tropical Basil essential oil is not recommended for:

• Pregnant or breastfeeding women
• Children under 6
• People with epilepsy, asthma or hypersensitivity to essential oils
• Elderly people with respiratory weaknesses

Always seek specialist medical advice if in doubt.

Specific precautions

• Possible skin irritation: Tropical Basil essential oil is dermocaustic when undiluted. It must always be diluted in a suitable vegetable oil before any application to the skin.
• Limited duration of use: courses of use should be short (a few days to a few weeks maximum), due to its high methyl chavicol content.
• No prolonged use without the advice of a healthcare professional qualified in aromatherapy.

Optimal storage

To preserve all its qualities, Tropical Basil essential oil should be stored:

• Away from light
• In a tightly closed tinted glass bottle
• At a stable temperature, preferably below 25°C

A well-stored oil can keep its properties for up to 3 years after opening.

The plant

Tropical Basil essential oil (Ocimum basilicum var. basilicum) is a precious essence extracted from the leaves of this well-known aromatic plant. Belonging to the Lamiaceae botanical family, this tropical variety of basil, also called "exotic basil", stands out for its wealth of aromatic compounds, highly valued in aromatherapy.

Grown mainly in India and Madagascar, as well as in parts of Africa and South-East Asia, tropical basil loves hot, humid climates, which allow it to develop its full olfactory and biochemical power.

The part of the plant used to produce this essential oil is the flowering aerial part (leaves and flowering tops). It is extracted by steam distillation, a gentle method that preserves all of its delicate aromatic molecules.

With a scent that is sweet, aniseed-like and slightly spicy, Tropical Basil essential oil is a must-have in traditional well-being and natural body care practices. Its unique composition also makes it a favourite ally in many applications, from aromatherapy to natural cosmetics.

Anecdotes & History

Tropical Basil has held a special place in many cultures since Antiquity:

• Indian origins: at the heart of Ayurvedic traditions, basil (especially as tulsi, or holy basil) is considered a sacred plant, used to support inner harmony.

• Ancient Egypt: basil was often used in spiritual and religious rituals for its purifying properties.

• Medieval Europe: basil was introduced to Europe in the Middle Ages and grown in monasteries for its aromatic and culinary virtues.

• Symbolism: in some traditions, basil symbolises protection, fertility and love.

Even today, its unique fragrance continues to delight lovers of natural care, aromatic meditation and delicate fragrance compositions.

Physical and olfactory characteristics

Tropical Basil essential oil is characterised by:

• Appearance: clear liquid

• Colour: colourless to very pale yellow

• Scent: fresh, aniseed-like, slightly sweet and spicy, with a characteristic herbaceous note

Aromatically, its complex, warm fragrance naturally encourages relaxation and calm.

It is also a popular oil in natural perfumery for its soft, balanced notes.

Biochemical composition

The richness of Tropical Basil essential oil lies in its unique biochemical composition.

Its main active constituents are:

• Methyl chavicol (also called estragole): 70% to 85%

• Linalool: 10% to 15%

• 1,8-cineole (in smaller proportion)

• Eugenol, Ocimene and other aromatic traces

Methyl chavicol, the main molecule, gives this essential oil its tonic action, as well as some of its traditionally reported antispasmodic properties.
