The plant

Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis) is an emblematic tree of the Mediterranean basin, belonging to the Lauraceae family. A symbol of victory and wisdom in Antiquity, it was used to weave the laurel wreaths given to victors.

Its aromatic leaves are steam-distilled to obtain an essential oil rich in powerful aromatic compounds.

Anecdotes & History

Bay Laurel holds a central place in Mediterranean traditions. In Greek and Roman Antiquity, it was considered sacred and protective, a symbol of glory and immortality. Priests, poets and emperors wore laurel wreaths as a sign of power and wisdom.

Used in cooking for centuries to flavour dishes and stocks, bay laurel has remained a pillar of Mediterranean cuisine. Even today, its essential oil appeals as much for its aromatic virtues as for its symbolic heritage, combining tradition, health and well-being.

Physical and olfactory characteristics

Bay Laurel essential oil has well-defined characteristics:

• Appearance: clear liquid
• Colour: pale yellow to light green
• Scent: fresh, spicy, slightly camphor-like, with powerful herbaceous notes

This fragrance, at once tonic and deep, makes it a much appreciated oil in aromatic compositions and energising care.

Biochemical composition

The richness of Bay Laurel essential oil lies in its balanced aromatic composition:

• 1,8-cineole (30 to 50%)
• Terpinyl acetate
• Sabinene
• Linalool
• Eugenol
• Alpha-terpineol

This particular biochemical profile explains its toning, cleansing and balancing properties.
