Traditional uses

Aromatherapy

Traditionally, Spike Lavender essential oil is used in room diffusion for its fresh, camphor-like fragrance, which encourages well-being and vitality.

Cosmetics and natural care

It is very popular in toning massage oils, refreshing lotions, purifying hair care and handmade soaps. It fits perfectly into an organic, sensory cosmetics approach.

Household care

Its fresh, powerful fragrance makes it a natural ingredient for homemade purifying sprays or household products, helping to deodorise and freshen the air.

Well-being and relaxation

In diffusion or an aromatic bath, Spike Lavender is sought after for its invigorating, relaxing notes, which invite you to let go.

Other possible uses

In natural perfumery, it is used in aromatic compositions (often citrusy or masculine). It is also found in candles, room sprays and reed diffusers.

Uses

Diffusion

A few drops in a diffuser are enough to create a fresh, balancing atmosphere.
It is advisable to diffuse in sessions of 10 to 15 minutes in a well-ventilated room.

⚠️ Do not diffuse continuously and avoid in the presence of young children.

Skin application

Always dilute Spike Lavender essential oil in a vegetable oil (jojoba, macadamia, sweet almond).
The recommended dilution is 10% maximum (1 drop for 9 drops of vegetable oil).

It is used in targeted skin care and in natural massage oils.

⚠️ Never use undiluted on the skin: risk of irritation.

Inhalation

For dry inhalation, put 1 drop on a tissue and breathe in to enjoy its refreshing fragrance.

Aromatic bath

Dilute a few drops in a dispersing base (e.g. Solubol, powdered milk) before adding them to lukewarm water for a relaxing, invigorating bath.

Synergies

Spike Lavender essential oil blends particularly well with:

• Tea Tree to purify the skin and support hygiene
• Peppermint for a tonic, refreshing blend
• Eucalyptus Radiata to enhance its respiratory, invigorating action
• Rose Geranium for harmonising, balancing diffusion
• Ravintsara for a tonic atmosphere, ideal in winter

Essential oils are powerful active ingredients that should be used with caution.

Although natural, Spike Lavender essential oil contains powerful molecules (camphor and 1,8-cineole). It must be used with care:

It is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women, or for children under 6.
It should be avoided by people with asthma or epilepsy, unless advised by a doctor.

⚠️ Possible skin irritation if used undiluted: always dilute it.
⚠️ Direct sun exposure after application is not recommended (slight risk of photosensitisation).
⚠️ Ask for medical advice if you have a neurological condition.

The plant

Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia) belongs to the Lamiaceae family. It grows wild in the south of France, Spain and the Balkans, on sunny, dry land.

Less well known than Fine Lavender, it stands out for its camphor content, which gives it a more powerful fragrance and complementary uses in aromatherapy and cosmetics.

Anecdotes & History

Spike Lavender's French name, "aspic", comes from an old legend: this variety, growing on hot, dry land, was said to be used to soothe the bites of the asp, a venomous snake.

Unlike Fine Lavender, which is grown at altitude, Spike Lavender grows on the plains in the sun, which explains its composition rich in camphor and 1,8-cineole.

In Antiquity, it was used in care balms, incense and thermal baths for its aromatic, refreshing virtues. Even today, it is highly prized in artisanal and natural perfumery, especially in masculine and aromatic compositions.

Physical and olfactory characteristics

Spike Lavender essential oil is recognisable by its distinctive characteristics:

• Appearance: clear liquid
• Colour: colourless to pale yellow
• Scent: fresh, herbaceous and camphor-like, more powerful than Fine Lavender

Its invigorating, camphor-like fragrance evokes medicinal plants, which makes it an essential oil for revitalising and purifying.

Biochemical composition

The richness of Spike Lavender essential oil lies in a synergy of aromatic molecules:

• Linalool (up to 35%)
• 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) (up to 25%)
• Camphor (10 to 15%)
• Other components: alpha-pinene, limonene, beta-caryophyllene

This particular composition explains its purifying, refreshing and revitalising properties.
