The plant

Lavandin Super (Lavandula hybrida super) is a natural hybrid of True Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia).

It belongs to the Lamiaceae family and is grown mainly in the south of France (Drôme, Vaucluse), as well as in Spain and Italy.

Its flowering tops are steam-distilled to produce an oil with a floral, soft and balanced aroma, with a subtle camphor touch.

Anecdotes & History

Lavandin Super does not exist in the wild: it is a natural hybrid grown since the 20th century for its high essential oil yields.

It is much appreciated in the cosmetics industry and in aromatherapy for its soft, round fragrance, more balanced than that of other lavandin varieties.

In the past, in the south of France, it was used to scent linen and keep insects away. The word lavandin comes from the Latin lavare, meaning "to wash", a reminder of its purifying and household uses.

Physical and olfactory characteristics

Lavandin Super essential oil can be recognised by:

• Appearance: fluid, clear liquid
• Colour: pale yellow to greenish yellow
• Scent: fresh, floral and balanced, close to lavender but softer, with a slightly camphor-like note

Its floral, soothing fragrance makes it a very versatile essential oil, suited to both relaxation and everyday care.

Biochemical composition

The richness of Lavandin Super essential oil lies in:

• Linalyl acetate (up to 45%)
• Linalool (about 30%)
• Camphor (traces to 6% max)
• 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol)
• Terpinen-4-ol
• Borneol

This balanced composition gives it its calming, purifying and cleansing properties, while remaining gentle and pleasant to use.
