The plant

Petitgrain bigarade comes from the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium ssp. amara), a tree of the Rutaceae family. Unlike sweet orange essence, obtained from the zest, Petitgrain essential oil is extracted from the leaves and young twigs by steam distillation.

Native to Asia, this tree has become widely acclimatised in the Mediterranean basin, particularly in Italy, and in Paraguay, where it is grown for its many uses: leaves (Petitgrain), flowers (Neroli) and fruit (Bitter orange).

Its fresh, green and floral scent reflects all the richness of this tree full of aromatic treasures.

Anecdotes & History

Petitgrain bigarade has long been used in Mediterranean perfumery. Its fresh, green notes are prized for creating elegant, soothing accords.

In Paraguay, its cultivation is an important economic resource, as the whole plant is used: flowers for Neroli, fruit for bitter orange and leaves for Petitgrain.

In some traditions, its scent was believed to help calm troubled minds and ease family tensions, hence its ritual use in homes.

Physical and olfactory characteristics

Petitgrain bigarade essential oil stands out for:

• Appearance: clear liquid
• Colour: colourless to pale yellow
• Odour: fresh, green, floral and slightly fruity, reminiscent of crushed bitter orange leaves

Biochemical composition

The richness of this oil lies in:

• Linalool (20–30%)
• Linalyl acetate (40–55%)
• Geraniol, Nerol and traces of limonene

This balanced composition gives it its soothing, harmonising and slightly purifying properties.
