The plant

Ylang-Ylang is a tropical tree of the Annonaceae family, native to Madagascar, the Comoros and Indonesia. Its yellow flowers, shaped like slender stars, give off an intense fragrance that makes it a precious plant in cosmetics and perfumery.

The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation, a process that can last 12 to 20 hours in order to extract all the aromatic fractions.

Anecdotes & History

Nicknamed the "flower of flowers", Ylang-Ylang holds a precious place in the traditions of South-East Asia and the Indian Ocean islands.

In the Comoros and Madagascar, its flowers were used to perfume hair and fabrics.

In Indonesia, they were scattered on the wedding bed to symbolise sensuality and the union of the spouses.

In the 19th century, Ylang-Ylang essential oil enjoyed great success in French perfumery, included in legendary compositions with floral and oriental accents.
